While dozing over a book, the narrator discovers a strange dictionary in a dream. Each word, once spoken aloud, transforms the body into its meaning. Saying heat sets the skin ablaze; saying forgiveness turns the body into a vast ocean, slowly breathing with the tide. Then a word appears that cannot be spoken. The dictionary is quietly closed—not out of fear, but because it is already known.
What follows is a panoramic forest where abandoned cars, prosthetic limbs hanging from trees, dismembered mannequins, masked pregnant bodies, and swarms of moths emerge like fragments of a forgotten dream. Here, what civilization has rejected returns in another form.
Drawing on Freud’s notion of the navel of the dream—the point where interpretation reaches its limit—the work explores how violence, desire, and death, once repressed, resurface as landscapes of the collective unconscious. Passing through a forest where the boundaries between life and death, good and evil dissolve, Dream’s Navel reveals that these forgotten forces have always existed within us.
Dream’s Navel was first conceived as part of FemLink-ART, an international collective of more than 150 women video artists from 64 countries exploring new artistic languages through collaborative video projects. An earlier version was presented in the exhibition Magic at LÁ Art Museum, Hveragerði, Iceland (2024), before evolving into its current form.
꿈의 배꼽
책을 읽다 잠든 꿈속에서 화자는 이상한 사전을 발견한다. 단어를 소리 내는 순간 몸은 곧장 그 의미가 된다. ‘뜨거움’을 발음하면 살이 달아오르고, ‘용서’를 말하면 거대한 대양이 되어 천천히 일렁인다. 그러다 차마 발음할 수 없는 단어 앞에서 조용히 사전을 덮는다. 두려워서가 아니라, 이미 그것을 알고 있었기 때문이다.
이어지는 숲의 파노라마에는 버려진 자동차, 나무에 매달린 의족, 절단된 마네킹, 가면을 쓴 임신한 몸, 나방 떼가 꿈의 파편처럼 출현한다. 문명이 밀어낸 것들은 사라지지 않고 다른 형태로 되돌아온다.
프로이트가 말한 ‘꿈의 배꼽’—해석이 더 이상 나아갈 수 없는 지점을 출발점으로, 이 작업은 억압된 폭력과 욕망, 죽음이 어떻게 집단 무의식의 풍경으로 귀환하는지를 탐구한다. 삶과 죽음, 선과 악의 경계가 흐려지는 숲을 통과하며, 우리는 끝내 그것들이 우리 안에 이미 존재해 왔음을 마주하게 된다.
《꿈의 배꼽》은 64개국 150여 명의 여성 비디오 아티스트가 참여하는 국제 콜렉티브 FemLink-ART 프로젝트에서 처음 구상되었다. 초기 버전은 2024년 아이슬란드 LÁ Art Museum의 그룹전 《Magic》에 소개되었으며, 이후 현재의 형태로 확장·발전하였다.
