About the work
There are moments, entering someone’s home, when you learn more than what they say. A scent left in an empty room. A floor worn by footsteps that always walked the same way. A single object set slightly askew. These quiet traces can reveal a person more clearly than language ever could.
The House of Others extends a question I have carried through my work for years — how identity can be read through traces that resist easy explanation. After Red Room (2017), which treated a room as a self-portrait, and House of Wind (2023), which explored nostalgia through a vanished childhood home, this work turns its gaze toward the homes of others.
The piece began during my residency at Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio. I visited the homes of several artists and residents, asking each of them: what is a house? I asked them to share the memories, the sensations, the scenes from their lives that had stayed with them most deeply. Understanding almost none of the Japanese spoken around me, I learned to listen for presence rather than conversation. I began to attend to silence more than language, to traces more than explanation.
This work does not treat the house as merely a private space, or an extension of the self. A house is where memory, relationship, and identity accumulate — a space where the boundary between myself and others is continually redrawn. The House of Others looks at the house as a place where relation is generated, and follows a journey in which encountering another becomes a way of returning to oneself.

누군가의 집에 들어서는 순간, 그 사람이 한 말보다 더 많은 것을 알게 되는 때가 있다. 빈방에 남아 있는 냄새, 늘 같은 방향으로 걸었던 흔적이 남은 바닥, 조금 비껴 놓인 물건 하나. 이러한 조용한 흔적들은 때로 언어보다 더 분명하게 한 사람을 드러낸다.〈타인의 집〉은 언어로는 쉽게 설명되지 않는 흔적을 통해 정체성을 읽어내는 나의 오랜 작업의 연장선에 있다. 방을 하나의 자화상으로 바라본 〈붉은 방〉(2017), 사라진 고향집을 통해 노스탤지어를 탐구한 〈바람의 집〉(2023)에 이어, 이번 작업은 시선을 타인의 집으로 옮긴다. 이 작품은 일본 삿포로 텐진야마 레지던시에 머무는 동안 시작되었다. 나는 여러 예술가와 주민들의 집을 방문해 “집이란 무엇인가”라는 질문을 던졌다. 그들에게 집의 기억과 감각, 그리고 삶 속에서 가장 깊이 남아 있는 장면들을 들려달라고 부탁했다. 일본어를 거의 이해하지 못했던 나는, 대화를 이해하기보다 존재를 듣는 법을 배우게 되었다. 그렇게 언어보다 침묵에, 설명보다 흔적에 귀 기울이기 시작했다.
이 작업은 집을 단순한 사적 공간이나 자아의 확장으로 바라보지 않는다. 집은 기억과 관계, 정체성이 쌓여가는 장소이며, 나와 타인의 경계가 끊임없이 다시 그려지는 공간이다. 〈타인의 집〉은 집을 관계가 생성되는 장소로 바라보고, 타인을 통해 자기를 돌아보는 여정을 담아낸다.
