Single Channel Video, 23min33sec, 2024
Hwaseong Fortress is a fortress city originally conceived by King Jeongjo as part of a new urban plan following the relocation of Crown Prince Sado’s tomb. Since then, it has accumulated multiple historical layers—serving as an ideal city of the late Joseon Dynasty, a strategic military site during the Korean War, and, amid rapid urban development, a UNESCO World Heritage site that continues to endure.
For several months, I walked the fortress walls repeatedly, approaching the city not as a historical monument but as a landscape where different temporalities coexist. The walls became a threshold from which inside and outside, city and nature, past and present could be perceived simultaneously. These accumulated walks were translated into a panoramic moving image.
Rather than documenting history, the work explores how layered time can be experienced through walking and the panoramic gaze. Here, the landscape is not a passive backdrop but a site where memory, power, preservation, and urban transformation intersect, inviting us to ask what a city remembers—and what it quietly erases over time.
수원화성
파노라마 영상 설치, 23min33sec, 2024
수원화성은 정조가 사도세자의 묘를 옮기며 조성한 최초의 계획도시이자, 오늘날까지 여러 시대의 기억이 축적된 성곽 도시이다. 조선 후기의 이상 도시로 시작한 이곳은 한국전쟁을 거치며 군사적 요충지가 되었고, 급격한 도시 개발 속에서는 유네스코 세계유산으로 보존되며 또 다른 시간을 살아왔다.
나는 몇 달 동안 성곽을 반복해서 걸으며 도시를 하나의 역사적 유적으로 바라보기보다, 서로 다른 시간들이 공존하는 하나의 풍경으로 읽고자 했다. 성곽은 안과 밖, 도시와 자연, 과거와 현재를 동시에 바라보게 하는 경계이자 시선의 장치가 되었고, 걷기를 통해 축적된 경험은 긴 파노라마 영상으로 번역되었다.
이 작품은 도시의 역사를 재현하는 다큐멘터리가 아니라, 반복된 걷기와 파노라마의 시선을 통해 시간의 층위를 감각하는 작업이다. 풍경은 단순한 배경이 아니라, 기억과 권력, 보존과 개발이 교차하는 장소이며, 나는 그 안에서 도시가 무엇을 기억하고 무엇을 지워왔는지를 질문한다.
