A scent left in an empty room. A floor worn by footsteps that always walked the same way. A single object set slightly askew. These quiet traces can reveal a person more clearly than language ever could.
The House of Others extends a question I have carried through my work for years \u2014 how identity can be read through traces that resist easy explanation. After Red Room (2017), which treated a room as a self-portrait, and House of Wind (2023), which explored nostalgia through a vanished childhood home, this work turns its gaze toward the homes of others.
The piece began during my residency at Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio. I visited the homes of several artists and residents, asking each of them: what is a house? I asked them to share the memories, the sensations, the scenes from their lives that had stayed with them most deeply. Understanding almost none of the Japanese spoken around me, I learned to listen for presence rather than conversation. I began to attend to silence more than language, to traces more than explanation.
This work does not treat the house as merely a private space, or an extension of the self. A house is where memory, relationship, and identity accumulate \u2014 a space where the boundary between myself and others is continually redrawn. The House of Others looks at the house as a place where relation is generated, and follows a journey in which encountering another becomes a way of returning to
